Jacksonville Beach has one of the easiest beach days in Florida: park, walk to the sand, and stay until the sun drops behind you. The trick is a bag that covers the whole day without weighing a ton. This is the list our team actually uses.
The essentials
- Water, then more water. Two refillable bottles per person, frozen the night before.
- Reef-friendly sunscreen. Reapply every two hours and after every swim.
- Polarized sunglasses. They cut glare off the water so you can actually see the surfers.
- A lightweight towel. Quick-dry fabric beats a thick cotton towel that stays damp all afternoon.
- Shoes for hot sand. Barefoot-style shoes are light and easy to rinse.
- A small first-aid pouch. Bandages, antiseptic wipes and something for jellyfish stings.
Local tip: check the flag at the lifeguard stand when you arrive. A purple flag means dangerous marine life has been spotted.
Nice to have
- A shade tent or umbrella for the hours between noon and 3pm.
- A zip bag for phones so sand and spray stay out.
- Snacks that don't melt: fruit, nuts and granola bars.
- A trash bag. Leave the beach cleaner than you found it.
- A mini car vacuum for the sand that always makes it home.
- A light layer for when the sea breeze picks up in the evening.
